We've decided to go with artificial turf. More expensive short term but worth it long term because a) no hives for me! and b) no mowing or watering. The watering bill alone should make this worthwhile in just a few years.

So, the challenge is to see how much I can "shrink" the grass coverage by putting in planters/flower beds but not sacrificing too much play space.

And this is to the left. I think I'm at least going to put a bed all down this side.

I haven't decided about doing a bed in front of the retaining wall or not...

Any suggestions are very welcome!!

I think I'm going to sod the backyard by myself.

And don't try to talk me out of it. I'm well aware of the fact that it will be the most miserable experience of my life, that I will down entire bottles of Motrin and make multiple trips to see my chiro and I will probably want to shoot my husband since he doesn't want to help me.

But, if I don't there will always be dirt in my house tracked in from the dog and I won't get to enjoy the fact that I even HAVE a yard now.

This is what it looked like when we moved in. Now thanks to all the rain there are some patches of grass and a LOT of weeds. I've already managed to level it out pretty well.

I'm going to build a planter in the corner (bottom photo) and probably plant a lemon tree there.

I want to put a small, narrow shed here and per the suggestion of my contractor friend cover the ground with gravel. It'll help with drainage and be a good spot to put toys, etc.

Patio

I want to get two more round tables (so we can seat 12 outside) and an umbrella or two. The blue furniture will probably end up in a corner on the grass or something. I really like it, it's plastic and was dirt cheap from Linens N Things!

I think I'm going to start this in April or May but I'll keep you posted. Maybe my madness will subside....
